About 18 employees of PLATT, the local architecture, construction and interior design firm, banded together recently to clean up trash along Cathey's Creek Road and Cathey's Creek as part of the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The crew worked on just over a mile of the road and creek, just upstream of the City of Brevard Water Treatment Plant in the protected watershed of Pisgah National Forest.

Typically, PLATT employees are given time off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to engage in the national Martin Luther King Day of Service, started by former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis, who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. The federal legislation challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen action volunteer service in honor of King.
