James R. McCracken, of Brevard, a devoted husband, and father, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021.

He was preceded in death and welcomed home by his loving wife of 41 years, Alma McCracken; brothers, Richard Wayne McCracken, of Brevard, Robert Douglas McCracken, of Frederick, Md .; and father, Roy McCracken.

He was born July 7, 1950 to the late Roy Franklin McCracken of Brevard.

The many family and friends surviving to cherish his memory include his mother, Eva Naomi Jenks; children, Alice Fanning, stepchildren, David Strickland, Shirley Strickland, Wilma Strickland and Frank Jackson; brothers and sisters, Linda Mae Hovernale, of Big Pool, Md., Nancy Carol Foster, of Taylorsville, N.C., Nancy McCracken Galloway, of Brevard, Robert Eugene McCracken, of Brevard, Rebecca McCracken Hunter, of Asheville, Sheila Lantz Wallace, of Charleston, S.C., Eston Leo Lantz Jr., of Capital Heights, Md. and Virgie Lantz Heath, of Brevard.

He will be greatly missed by his 12 grandchildren, including Tyler, Gage and Brandon; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as his extended family and community of friends he made over the past 70 years.

A native of Bethesda, Md., he moved to Brevard in the 1970s, married Alma McCracken, and was a member of the community for the remainder of his life. He worked with and cared for animals and retired as an animal control office for Transylvania County after 25 years of service. He introduced his family to many of their rescued family pets growing up, including his final two loyal companions, Bunny and Brownie.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021, with Pastor Shane Hardesty officiating.

The family cannot convey the fullness of their hearts or the gratitude for the kind words and sentiments of family and friends that remind them that James will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation can be made to Carr’s Hill Baptist Church.
