In 1775 James Boswell recorded Samuel Johnson’s famous quote that “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Boswell was quick to point out that Johnson “did not mean a real and generous love of (one’s) country, but that pretend patriotism which so many… have made a cloak of self-interest.” This quote came to mind when I read the Board of Commissioner’s actions regarding the “Constitutional Rights” resolution.
