Free Meals May Reduce Federal Funding To Schools – Transylvania County

A directive by the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) to make sure all school children are fed during the COVID-19 pandemic may result in reduced federal funding for Transylvania County Schools and other school systems in the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris said at a work session for the Transylvania County Board of Education on Monday, Feb. 1, that since all students now eat for free under direction of the USDA, many parents “don’t see the need right now” to fill out applications for free or reduced prices for meals.
