Wee first graders standing in line with arms ready. Oh, the bravery that took. Little soldiers, all. The entire first grade stood at attention, getting marching orders. The mission? To stop polio.

I remember a large and well-lit classroom. I wore white anklets and scuffed oxfords. Although one among many, I was absolutely alone as I took baby steps toward the women giving the inoculations. I was taking my first politically active steps.
