The Transylvania Times -

Start Vaccinating Teachers

I am 65. I would gladly give my place in line for a COVID-19 vaccination to a teacher or school employee. They have to go out to work into a hazardous workplace. I can stay home and be safe.

Our county needs to follow the state guidelines. How can we ever expect to keep young families in our community if we don’t make our schools a priority? How can our businesses stay open and our economy thrive without making the operation of our schools a priority? We have to keep teachers and school employees healthy in order to operate the schools.

If a teacher or school employee gets sick and dies because Transylvania County refuses to follow the state guidelines, it would be terrible. Would the county have some responsibility for that tragedy?

Why not do both? Keep vaccinating seniors, but also start “limited” vaccination of school employees? Do one school or day care a week. There could be a lottery for which school goes first. This would only divert a small amount of vaccine each week, but the county would still be following the state guidelines. An all or nothing approach to this issue neglects the health of our community as a whole.
