AAUW Prepares Yellow Boxes For Book Donations – Brevard, NC

Last updated 3/1/2021 at 3:50pm

Get book donations ready. AAUW’s yellow boxes are coming back.

This is a hopeful sign, according to a press release from the Brevard chapter of the American Association of University Women American (AAUW), that it will be able to hold its annual used book sale this summer.

Yellow book donation boxes are the primary means of collecting book donations to be sold at the sale. This will be the 51st annual AAUW Book Sale and, as in the past, it is expected to be another rousing success with support from this community.

While the 2020 AAUW Book Sale was cancelled because of the pandemic, plans are moving forward optimistically that the 2021 AAUW Book Sale will take place from June 12-17 at Brevard College Boshamer Gymnasium, contingent on and adhering to local, state and Brevard College guidelines.

As in the past, all proceeds from the sale will provide scholarships for Transylvania County girls (ages elementary through high school), as well as Blue Ridge Community College and Brevard College women.

When the 2020 sale was cancelled, AAUW already had a large number of books on hand and accumulated more from August, 2020, forward, thanks to the donations from local citizens.

The lack of storage space led AAUW members to ship about 7,000 donated books to Thrift Books, an online reseller. The proceeds from these sales have been used to support 2020 scholarships at Blue Ridge Community College, Brevard College and the TIME Science Program for Transylvania County high school students.

The 2020 science camps for elementary and middle school students were cancelled by the pandemic but these scholarships will be reinstated once these camps reopen.

The yellow boxes will be placed around town to collect gently-used books for the 2021 AAUW Book Sale.

Donations are welcome from all genres, including travel, religion, history, classics, art, music, gardening, sports, technology, fiction, nonfiction, psychology, cooking and sciences. Children’s books, as well as puzzles, DVDs and CDs, are also needed. However, the AAUW does not accept textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries or periodicals. AAUW also encourages the donation of antique or collectible books which are offered on the chapter’s eBay site throughout the year.

These books will often bring more money for scholarships.

Donors may drop a small bag or box of books into the yellow boxes around town. Larger donations will also be accepted at the AAUW Book Nook.

For those with a large donation or who are unable to get to a collection location, call Kristen Alpert at (203) 913-6935 to arrange a donation time and plan.

In addition, AAUW accepts direct monetary donations for the scholarship fund.

Brevard AAUW members volunteer hundreds of hours getting ready for the annual sale.

It is the primary fundraising activity of the branch and has been recognized at the state level of AAUW for its fund-raising success. All donated books are collected, sorted priced and repacked by category throughout the year, but the serious work takes place between February and May each year.

A few days before the sale, an estimated 1,200 boxes of books will be moved to the college gym, where they are unpacked and arranged for sale. From June 12 through June 17 book lovers and collectors will be able to purchase gently-used books at bargain prices to support scholarships in the community.

The following is a list of this year’s yellow box locations. Brevard AAUW thanks these establishments for their continued generosity and support of the book sale.

If other organizations or businesses would like to be included as a book collection site, call Laura at (561) 818-7366.
