James (Jim) Sidney Hillman

James (Jim) Sidney Hillman, 86, of Brevard, passed away March 2, 2021.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., July 8, 1934, and was a graduate of Hill House High School in New Haven.

He proudly served the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1959. He then went to work as a draftsman for the Winchester Repeating Arms Company (a division of Olin Corporation) in New Haven. In 1964, he transferred to Olin Corporation’s Fine Paper and Film Group at Pisgah Forest. He was promoted to chief draftsman in 1972. His knowledge of the machinery led to a later promotion to maintenance engineer. He stayed with the company through its purchase by P.H. Glatfelter and retired in 1999.

He was a member of the Red Devils company league softball team and bowled in the company league for several years. He was a member of the Transylvania Cruisers antique automobile car club, where he and his wife, Anita, enjoyed attending many car shows with their classic Baby Packard sedan.


He was the eldest child of the late Sidney Rufus Hillman and Victoria Louella Thomas.

He is survived by sisters, Jane Gerard, Martha Tokarczyk and Dorothy (and her husband Frank) Magnotta, and will be deeply missed by his wife, Anita, of 59 years.

He is survived by his children, James Hillman Jr. and Victoria Shuford, and her husband, Kent; grandchildren, Jacob Shuford, Holly Shuford and Sara Shuford; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Services will be held March 13, 2021, at Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations, 100 N. Country Club Road, in Brevard.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., with Father Shawn O’Neal officiating.

Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest.
