Requiem For Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the organization responsible for continuing Dr. Seuss’ legacy, recently decided to ban further publication and licensing of six of Dr. Seuss’ children’s books. This decision amounts to virtual book burning. Book burning is an anathema to any free society, although history informs us it will occur in times of oppression, such as the Nazi book burnings.

Martin Niemoller, a German theologian and Lutheran pastor who lived through the Holocaust, summarized the situation poetically with his famous quote:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out...
