Several years ago, Carroll Parker planted hybrid chestnut trees in front of his Island Ford Road home as part of a research effort to see if the seedings, which were a cross between blight-prone American chestnuts and blight-resistant Chinese chestnuts, would thrive. Unfortunately, they succumbed to a fungal root rot.
