The main courtroom at the Transylvania County Courthouse has been modified due to COVID-19.

Construction on the Transylvania County Courthouse was started in 1879 and completed in 1881. In 1979, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the building is viewed as unsafe and unsuitable for court functions.

At the March 22 Board of Commissioners' meeting, commissioners suggested the board's top priority was to address a new courthouse.

Cost projections in 2020 ranged from $38 million for a new courthouse beside the Public Safety Complex off Morris Road to $42 million in downtown.
