Since the day he was born in Rosman in 1933, 87-year-old master carpenter Joe Smith hasn’t stopped moving.

Even after retiring from a 37-year career at the Ecusta Plant, he kept busy with various volunteering positions at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Brevard Fire Department and the Transylvania County Honor Guard.

He lined the old Rosman High School football field for 15 years, and worked on carpentry projects for the 15-year run of a carnival that raised money for Transylvania Community Hospital capital projects, a carnival that began in 1992 and was located in several...
