The Transylvania Times -

Ignoring Brevard's Most Famous Person

Mr. Charles Brendle totally rejects the concept of systemic racism in this country. He generally blames the news media for reporting negative events to sell newspapers and failing to properly research statistics – therefore dividing our country.

Let’s narrow the focus to Transylvania County for discussion sake and ask how he characterizes race relations in our area and, specifically, why there is no sign at the Transylvania County border announcing the “Home of Moms Mabley,” or why there is not a street named “Moms Mabley Street” in Brevard for our most famous resident. Why is there no “Moms Mabley Week” with parades and merriment?

If not systemic racism, then how did we come to so marginalize black lives and history in our own hometown?

- Paul “Buddy” Lawrence, Brevard
