BHS Students Hunt For Buried Treasure

Blue Ridge Students Graduate On Saturday, May 8, Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) held five small graduation ceremonies, so that both graduates and their guests could be socially distanced. Above, BRCC president Dr. Laura Leatherwood shares a "thumbs up" with some graduates while, below, she presents a diploma.

On Friday, May 7, students in Matthew Tuckey's Honors Physics course at Brevard High School took part in a hunt for buried pirate treasure that he hopes will become a semi-annual event.

After learning about various electronic com-ponents that are ubiquitous in the devices people use, such as capacitors and transistors, Tuckey's students etched their own circuit boards and used them to build metal detectors from wood and recycled plastic containers. The funds for batteries, components and other necessities came from a Transylvania County Schools Education Foundation grant.
