A wall covered with the photos of local residents who have served in the U.S.military will once again be presented at the Lake Toxaway Community Center this Memorial Day weekend. The display also honors those who were killed in action.

Grand Re-Opening

The Lake Toxaway Community Center is cleaned up and everything is bright and shiny and ready for everyone to come out this Friday, May 28, for the special Memorial Day event. The volunteers have been working overtime getting everything ready for our big re-opening. The tables have been set up in a way that everyone should feel comfortable, and we have checked with the health department and they are suggesting that folks wear masks. If you would prefer, we will have to-go boxes, as well as a drive-up available. We are really looking for everyone coming out and participating as we have missed seeing everyone. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. Veterans will be eating free this Friday.

Our special dinner will be barbecue, cole slaw, baked beans, homemade desserts, iced tea, lemonade and coffee, with soft drinks for $ 1 extra.

Attendees will see the distinct white crosses out in our parking lot that depict each of the Transylvania residents who gave their lives for our country. It is quite inspirational.

The Honor Guard of Transylvania County will perform and there will be other special events for Memorial Day. The band Junction 280 will be performing.

While you are enjoying our Friday event, please sign up to help volunteer or to make desserts for our future Friday night dinners. Every little bit helps.

The bands scheduled for June are: Cane Creek Bluegrass Band June 4, Mac Anderson and Family on June 11, and Hickory Hollow on June 18.

Food Bank

The North Toxaway Baptist Church Food Bank will be open this Saturday, May 29. It serves the Lake Toxaway, Sapphire and Quebec communities. The food bank is located at 51 Slick Fisher Road in Lake Toxaway and is open from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. every other Saturday. The food bank is operating as a "drive through" food distribution center. Therefore, they ask that all customers remain in their vehicle instead of coming inside the food bank to "shop" for items. The volunteers will sign you in from your parked car and then they will bring out the boxes of food and place them in your vehicle. Even if you have never used the food bank before and/or you do not qualify as low income but are temporarily out of work due to the current situation, you are welcome to come and receive food until the pandemic is over and/or you have returned to work. The next food bank is scheduled for June 12.

Lake Toxaway Fire and Rescue News

The following information, news and helpful tips are from Bobby Cooper, firefighter and paramedic of the Lake Toxaway Fire and Rescue:

May 16-22 was National EMS Week. It was a time to honor frontline heroes dedicated to providing emergency medicine that saves so many lives every day. Locally, this includes all fire, rescue and EMS agencies that provide medical services. The theme this year was, "This Is IS EMS: Caring for Our Communities." Please take the opportunity to thank your local emergency services personnel.

For more specific information, contact the fire department at (828) 966-4900, or [email protected]

We want to thank the EMS workers every week and everyone at the Lake Toxaway Fire and Rescue.

Quilting Group

The Lake Toxaway Quilt Group will meet at the Lake Toxaway Community Center on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 8.

Everyone is invited, whatever your skill level. We bring our own lunch, work on whatever project we feel like and if you are want to learn, we can help you. The building is quite large, so we will have lots of space to spread out. It is a good idea to bring an extension cord and a light, as well as all of your supplies.
