MAHEC Expanding Women's Health Services To Brevard

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) has announced it is expanding its women’s health services to Brevard under the direction of Dr. Brian Barrow in the same office where Barrow has been providing OB/GYN care through Transylvania Women’s Care.

“It has been an honor to support the community over the past 11 years,” Barrow said. “I look forward to providing the same high-quality care for my patients at MAHEC Women’s Care at Brevard, working with a team that is dedicated to women’s health here in Brevard and the surrounding area.”

As the region’s only high-risk OB/GYN provider, MAHEC’s maternal-fetal medicine specialists have supported Transylvania County women for many years through expert consultations with their primary care and OB/GYN providers and specialty services in Asheville.

“We’re delighted to partner with Dr. Barrow and the community to ensure women can receive care close to home with providers they know and trust,” said Beth Buys, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MAHEC. “For the past 47 years, MAHEC has focused on improving access to healthcare across Western North Carolina, particularly in more rural communities. MAHEC Women’s Care at Brevard is a natural extension of this work.”

Current patients will experience no disruption in the continuity or quality of care, a release said. New patients are welcome and can establish care at this growing practice that includes Barrow and Dr. Jamie Ramsey, both board-certified OB/GYNs; Dr. Bonnie Green, a family physician that specializes in women’s healthcare; or certified nurse-midwife Cheryl Harrington.

MAHEC Women’s Care at Brevard is located at 87 Medical Park Drive, Suite B. New and existing patients can schedule appointments by calling (828) 547-3004.

MAHEC was established in 1974 and serves a 16-county region in Western North Carolina and is one of nine area health education centers in North Carolina.

MAHEC’s mission is to recruit, train and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina with a focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources. MAHEC offers residency training in family medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, psychiatry, pharmacy and dentistry, as well as fellowship training in addiction medicine, sports medicine, hospice and palliative care, and rural medicine.

MAHEC’s Asheville campus is also home to UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC, an academic health center in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill that includes programs from the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and UNC Adams School of Dentistry.
