Thiele family members and the Transylvania County Honor Guard invite the public to join them to honor and celebrate the service of Howard “Sarge” Thiele, Honor Guard commander, on Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m.

Guests are invited to stay for a barbecue lunch.

The festivities will be held at the VFW Post 4309, 50 Veterans Circle, Brevard.

Attendance is free.

During the Vietnam War, Thiele was a heavy truck driver with the 523rd Transportation Company.

The 8th Transportation Group ferried supplies from coastal ports to inland bases, hauling anything from socks and uniforms to bombs, ammunition and food supplies.

The heavy trucks were a prime target for the Viet Cong. He later became a motor pool sergeant. He retired after 34 years of service.

Thiele succeeded George Poor as Honor Guard commander about 10 years ago when he moved to the Brevard area.

Throughout the years, the Transylvania County Honor Guard has performed solemn ceremonies of respect for hundreds of veterans.

“The Honor Guard tries to accept every invitation to serve,” said Thiele, “in Transylvania County, in Black Mountain and sometimes in Asheville. To the man, we feel we are doing this for the rest of our lives. We try never to turn a service down.”

This year, Thiele will retire from his role as Honor Guard commander.

This party is the community’s way of saying “Thank you!”
