A Timeless Sliding Rock Offers Rejuvenation

Like many novices, Matt McGregor is wide-eyed and ready to exit the cold pool at the bottom of Sliding Rock after his first trip down. After getting acclimated to the frigid water, however, he slid down several times, much to his enjoyment.

A billion years ago – give or take – the drama of frictional tectonic plates, driven by convection currents of semi-molten magma, began the preliminary design phase of what we know of now as the Sliding Rock Recreational Area in Pisgah Forest off U.S. 276.

This friction created a prehistoric furnace that melded a 60-foot mountain slope over which rushes 11,000 gallons of water per minute with a velocity that can carry us away, temporarily, from the real world.
