Thank you to Emmett Casciato (far right) from the Veterans Museum of the Carolinas for bringing the Merchant Marine flag to add to the center's military flag collection.

Fresh Corn On The Cob

Chris Craft is back, and this Friday, July 16, we will have his famous fresh corn on the cob, just picked on same day from the field and served with pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade desert of your choice, lemonade, iced tea and coffee all for a $10 donation.

Soft drinks are $1 extra. Dinner will be served from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. You do not want to miss this meal, and the music is great, as well. The band playing from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday will be the Cane Creek Blue Grass Band.

"Coming from Ander-son, S.C., Cane Creek epitomizes much of what a local bluegrass band can be. Featuring five able musicians who sing and play both classic bluegrass covers and original material from several of its members, this band is entertaining and personable.

They communicate a love for the music and for making music together. Sometimes they achieve a haunting sound many bands would aspire to emulate, while at others they present driving music that gets feet tapping and puts smiles of the audience's faces"

Remember to come out and use our playground and walking track. Want a wonderful way to meet people in our community and get some much-needed exercise? Then visit our walking track. We have groups of walkers at various times of the day. We have early morning walkers and late afternoon walker. It would be nice if we could put up some lights, so we could accommodate those who wish to walk at night during the summer.

We have a great gated playground, with a covered picnic area, for the children in our community. It's a good place to bring grandchildren that may be visiting. There is shade from numerous trees, as well as the covered area.

Thanks to the weekly visitors from the Riverbend RV Resort on Friday nights. It is nice to have everyone from the area and, especially, those from the Riverbend RV Resort who come out each Friday night.

Band Schedule

The band schedule for the summer is July 23, High Top Mountain Harmony; July 30, TBA; Aug. 6, Junction 280; Aug. 13, Mac Anderson; Aug. 20, Split Rail; and Aug. 27, Hickory Hollow.

St. Andrews

By-the-Lake

St. Andrews By-the-Lake has a Lake Toxaway summer resident as the visiting minister this week. The Rev. Dr. Kent Reynolds is the guest minister at St. Andrews By-the-Lake in Lake Toxaway on Sunday, July 18, at 11 a.m. Kent and his wife reside in Houston and own a home at Lake Toxaway.

Reynolds has over 30 years of effective pastoral, academic and nonprofit experience. He also brings over 25 years of work in international aid, education, and economic and leadership development.

We have so many wonderful churches in the Lake Toxaway area. This chapel is open air and offers a pleasant experience of like sitting in the trees. The chapel's address is 546 Blue Ridge Road and is located on Route 281 North, 0.6 of a mile from U.S. 64 West.

Serve Our Seniors

The Serve Our Seniors (SOS) program kicked off on June 1 at the Quebec Community Center. The program offers upper Transylvania County seniors a safe and welcoming place to socialize and take part in a variety of activities meant to support healthy aging. The SOS program was made possible through a grant from the WNC Bridge Foundation. WCCA currently hosts the LunchPlus congregate meal program at the Quebec Community Center from 9:30 a.m. to noon each weekday. The SOS program invites seniors to stay, play and learn on Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Some of the program's upcoming activities include exercise classes, cards/ board games, crafts, presentations on crime safety, fall prevention and nutrition, as well as visits from health professionals, community organizations, legal groups, aging services providers and others.

For more information, call Lauren Street at (828) 862-4466 or WCCA at (828) 884-2255.

The Quebec Comm-unity Center is located at 11846 Rosman Highway.

Gerald Owen

Help us honor one of the long-time members of our community, Gerald Owen, who will be celebrating his 90th birthday on July 24. Gerald and JoAnn are such a big part of our Community Center.

We hope he has an enjoyable day. Well wishers may send cards to him at:101 John Deere Hill, Brevard, NC 28712.

What a great milestone for Gerald. Please help us make it a special day for this special person.

Missing Wheelchair

There was a special visitor at the Community Center last Friday night. Jim Barton, of Lake Toxaway, came over with a group from Florida on his wagon. One of his horses seemed like it liked the camera.

We have had a wheelchair at the community center available for use for the community. It had been loaned out, and it may not have been returned. Let us know if you have any information on our lost wheelchair.

Personal Notes

Please continue to keep Jan Hardin in your prayers. Jane Donoghue is feeling much better, is at home and hopes to be coming back up again at the end of the month.
