When you step out of your house into your front yard, do you expect to get struck by lightning? I certainly don’t. But it could happen. It is extremely unlikely, but not impossible. In fact, the chance is about 1 in 280,000 within a one-year timeframe. This seems to us to be so small that we don’t worry about it at all; we don’t even think about it.

Compared to that, the chance of dying in a car accident is much higher, about 1 in 8,300 per year. Since that is a much greater risk, people do something about it: they use seat belts. And seat belts work.
