School Board Votes To Make Mask Wearing Optional

In a 4-1 vote Monday, the Transylvania County Board of Education decided to make masks optional for students, teachers, staff and visitors, effective Aug. 9, but to revisit the issue at its Sept. 20 meeting.
Board Vice Chair Ron Kiviniemi was the sole vote against the motion.
Addressing a packed audience at the Morris Education Center, the Board of Education, in wanting to allow as many public comments as possible before the actual vote on a masking policy, extended the allotted time for comments from the usual 30 minutes to 60 minutes.
