Ann Gaines Mitchell

Ann Gaines Mitchell (known as Flossie in her younger years) passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, in Crawfordsville, Ind. She was 82 years old.

She was born in Brevard to the late John Mannon and Kathleen Belcher Gaines. She graduated from Brevard High School and continued her education at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics.

Aug. 5, 1961, she married James Robert (Bob) Mitchell Jr., who preceded her in death Jan. 7, 1980. Her daughter-in-law, Sara Moseley; older sisters, Ruth and Kate, and nephew Lee, also predeceased her.

She lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., for many years before moving to Crawfordsville in 2012 to be closer to her daughter. Throughout the years, she worked as a middle and high school math teacher in the Chattanooga area. She began studying music as a child and played piano and organ in church services beginning at age 16 and continuing into her elderly years.

Her life was characterized by her deep Christian faith and church involvement. She showed great courage through her husband's long illness and death, serving as an example to others, especially her grateful children.

She is survived by her children, Rob Mitchell and Carolyn Mitchell Baer, and their spouses, Eva Mitchell and Jon Baer; her four grandchildren, Lily Moseley, and Nathan, Chris and Noelle Baer.

She delighted in attending her grandchildren's piano recitals and sporting events.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bickford Memory Care in Crawfordsville for their kindness, which significantly contributed to her wellbeing and happiness in her last years.

A service is being planned in Chattanooga. Memories and condolences can be shared online at
