Schools start on Monday, Aug. 16. So, when leaving for work you need to leave a little earlier as there will be children waiting by the side of the road for the school bus. Be sure to watch out for the children and the school buses.

Yard Sale

There will be a yard sale at the Balsam Grove Community Center on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 8 a.m. until noon. Linens, dishes and glassware will be half price. Breakfast will be for sale at 8 a.m. This helps support our community center.

Jam Session

A jam session is planned for Aug. 21 at the Community Center, with a chicken supper at 6 p.m. and music at 7 p.m.

Meet the Teacher

All elementary school children are invited to attend meet the teacher on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Parents and students can find their classrooms and meet the teacher before school starts. If you haven’t registered your child for school, you need to go to the school and do so now.

New Baby

Ruth Anne and Greg Newton, of Penrose, announced the birth of their son, Jake Travis (J.T.), at 11:51 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, at AdventHealth in Fletcher. He is 19-and-a-half inches long. Ruth Anne is the daughter of Mike and Cathey Kitchen, of Balsam Grove, and Greg is the son of Wayne and Evelyn Newton, of Pisgah Forest. Both mother and baby are doing well.

God’s Way Food Pantry

The food pantry operates every other Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. It is drive through only. If you are sick or unable to come, please call to have someone pick up for you. The next food pantry is Aug. 21. Blessings to David, Lydia and staff.

Food Truck

The Bread of Life Food truck is at the Balsam Grove Community Center on Wednesdays from noon until 1 p.m. This is a free meal for everyone. Come out and enjoy your lunch at the community center or take it home with you.


If you have donations for the yard sales, please contact an officer of the Community Club to meet you at the community center to put it in the building. Items get ruined if they are just dropped off at the door, and then we have to pay to have it hauled off. We appreciate your cooperation. Those celebrating an anniversary this week are Mr. and Mrs. Barry Ownbey, Aug. 18 We wish them a happy anniversary.


Those celebrating a birthday this week are Herbert Owen and Nicole Owen, Aug. 12; Emmit Mason, Aug. 13; August Hall, Aug. 14; Chandler Griffin and Thomas Partin, Aug. 15; and James Cleo “Buster” McCall, Aug. 16. We wish all of them a happy birthday.
