When Benjamin Franklin was asked what form of government the 1787 Constitutional Convention had designed, he replied “a Republic, if you can keep it.” Three of the biggest points of tension in the American experiment with democracy have been majority rule vs. the rights of the minority, rights vs. responsibilities, and individual rights vs. the common good.
