Some Visit Waterfalls To Experience The 'Spray Cliff'

Botanist Ed Schwartzman uses a hand lens to identity a tiny bryophyte at a Transylvania County waterfall.

When most people visit a waterfall in Transylvania County, or anywhere else, they don't think about the things they can't see or experience.

They enjoy how the waterfall excites all our senses at once: The cool spray against our skin, the taste of the moisture in the air, the sound of the falling water, the refreshing smell of the waterfall environment and, of course, the visual excitement.

However, botanists, conservationists and the folks at Waterfall Keepers of North Carolina have an additional focus when they visit some of the county's waterfalls.
