The Swill psychologist Carl Jung (1875-1961) founded what is known as Depth Psychology.

Jung believed that religion is as natural to humans as breathing and has its source in the deepest layers of the psyche. This source consists of powers of a non-personal nature. In other words they do not belong to the ego or the “I.”

They are the “not I,” as, for example, when Paul says in his letter to the Galatians, “not I but Christ who lives within me.”
