Our community recently gave recognition to the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, which resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives. Meaningful ceremonies were held at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorist attacks were followed by 20 years of war in Afghanistan.

USA Today on Aug. 20 dedicated a section to honoring the more than 2,400 service members killed during Operations Enduring Freedom and Freedom’s Sentinel. The paper printed the names of each fallen service member as of that week.
