After another hard loss against Draughn last week, the Rosman Varsity Tigers will play their last game of the regular season on their home turf against the Mitchell Mountaineers tomorrow night.

Mitchell by all accounts is a formidable team, boasting a 6-2 record in the 2021 regular season while being undefeated in conference play out of four games. They have won their last four games, most recently against Mountain Heritage, coming away with a shutout victory, 33-0. The Mountaineers have concentrated the majority of their offense this season on rushing, as, thanks to junior quarterback Ty Turbyfill, they’ve amassed 789 passing yards. It is dwarfed by their record in rushing yards, with 2,360 overall.

At the same time, that tremendous rushing game is also thanks to Turbyfill. He is by far the heaviest hitter on that front, as over the course of eight games he has undertaken 146 carries and recorded 1,123 rushing yards.

The closest behind him is senior running back and linebacker Carter Hoyle. Hoyle, out of seven games, possesses 453 rushing yards to his name out of 65 carries.

Given that the highest receiving yardage comes in the form of 307, courtesy of junior wide receiver Dalton Hollifield, it’s safe to say that Mitchell heavily relies on their running game, and it has been successful.

Rosman Head Coach Dusty Robinson reflected on the most recent loss, stating that “we played well enough defensively and in the kicking game against Draughn to have a chance to win. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain any drives offensively.”

Robinson is also aiming to give his players an exciting last game and is concentrating on preparing for Mitchell’s strong stats.

“Mitchell will present a totally different challenge, very similar to Mountain Heritage,” he said. “They are very good, very fast and physical, and well coached. They hold the pole position in the conference at this point. We will spend the week preparing to stop what they do and getting our kids ready to play. I am excited to give the seniors a great sendoff and hope to see the community come out and support these young men.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
