The memorial on the grounds of the Transylvania County Courthouse commemorates those who gave their lives while serving in the Armed Forces.

At 11 a.m., today, the public will gather at the Transylvania County Courthouse gazebo to mark another Veterans Day.

Why is Veterans Day held on Nov. 11?

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.

Fighting had actually ended several months earlier when an armistice among the warring nations went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. So, Nov. 11, 1918, was considered as the end of "the war to end of all wars."
